John Brown's Bones

John Brown (May 9^th 1800 – December 2^nd 1859), a religious zealot and fierce opponent of slavery in Pre-Civil War America, was hanged at 11:15 a.m. on December 2^nd and pronounced dead at 11:50 a.m. His dead body was placed in a wooden coffin with the Hangman's noose still around his neck.

On the day of his death Brown wrote:

"I, John Brown, am now quite certain that the crimes of this guilty land will never be purged away but with blood. I had, as I now think, vainly flattered myself that without very much bloodshed it might be done."

Two days later, John Brown's lifeless body was buried on his family farm in North Elba, New York.
