John Evans Murdered Cosmic Pizza
John Evans was murdered by John Deloney who is accused of walking to a Cincinnati restaurant and executing the owner in front of the owner's wife and three children.

CINCINNATI, OH. - The man accused of killing a Hartwell pizzeria owner was arrested Wednesday in Indianapolis. IMPD say John Deloney, 27, turned himself in around 9 PM. He is currently in police custody at the Marion County Jail awaiting extradition to Ohio.

Deloney, an Indianapolis native, was in Cincinnati visiting his twin brother, according to investigators.

Detectives say the suspect shot Cosmic Pizza owner Richard Evans Saturday evening during an attempted robbery at the restaurant. Evans was shot twice in the back as his family watched.

Police say surveillance video and eyewitnesses helped them identify Deloney as the man who shot Evans.

“Luckily we were able to come and examine the video,” said Assistant Chief Dave Bailey with the Cincinnati Police Department.

John Deloney Murder CincinnatiDeloney has a criminal arrest record in both Ohio and Indiana for Theft and Auto Theft.

He was released on bond from the Dearborn County Jail on June 10th 2013. He was arrested May 2nd 2013 after he and a woman were accused of stealing a patron's credit card at Hollywood Casino.

Before that, Deloney was in the Hamilton County Justice Center for stealing a pickup truck and selling it for scrap. A judge put him on probation.

Evans' death has had an impact on the residents of Hartwell, many of whom were inside the eatery during the fatal robbery attempt. That includes Evans' wife and three children.

Elizabeth Russell, who lives three doors away from the eatery, said she saw Evans lying outside after he stumbled out of the restaurant.

“I opened my door and seen him laying there and it made me sick,” Russell said.

Gwendolyn Ellis said she moved to Hartwell because it’s quiet and safe. She can’t believe somebody walked into the neighborhood pizza shop and killed the owner.

“I know it’s hard. There ain’t no jobs out here. Money is tight. The economy is bad. But it don’t mean you take it from somebody else,” Ellis said. “You got to figure out how to make ends meet without hurting anybody else.”

Evans' funeral is set for Friday, June 21st 2013 at 11 AM at Hodapp Funeral Home, 7401 Vine Street, in Carthage.

A fund for Evans’ widow and three children has been set up via the website gofundme.com . More than $20,000 has already been raised.

Additionally, website administrator Dawn Murray reports that a cemetery plot was donated, but funds were still being sought for burial services. Donations can be made at the Evans family fund at Go Fund Me.com.
