Euric Cain raped two women, tried to kidnap another then shot a good Samaritan in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Euric Cain had nothing to say as an Orleans Parish judge imposed punishment for his 2015 spree of Rapes, Armed Robberies and the Attempted Murder of a Tulane medical student. These evil acts will see Cain imprisoned until at least the age of 75.
Cain declined the opportunity to speak to the judge or three of his victims, who made emotional statements in court about how Cain's violence in November 2015 nearly destroyed their lives.
"It hurts me to know that another human being can do this to people," said Dr. Peter Gold, the man Cain shot in the stomach and then tried to shoot in the head twice, only to have the gun malfunction.
Judge Robin Pittman imposed a sentence that will keep Cain, 22, locked up until 2069 without the benefit of parole or early release.
Cain pleaded guilty October 24th as part of a deal with prosecutors that averted a trial where he faced a potential life sentence if convicted of first-degree rape. That deal included a 50-year sentence. Pittman still had to decide on an additional sentence of one to five years for Cain's guilty plea to battery of a corrections officer. The judge settled on four years for that crime, which by state law must be served consecutive to his other sentence.
Serial rapsit Euric Cain's crimes escalated to Attempted Murder in New Orleans, Louisiana in 2015.
Assistant district attorney Kevin Guillory said each of Cain's victims during a two-day crime spree last November had approved the plea agreement. Cain's defense attorney, Brian Woods, said that despite his courtroom silence, his client was "very remorseful about what happened."
Cain pleaded guilty to the attempted first-degree murder of Gold, then a Tulane medical student who intervened in Cain's attempt to kidnap and rape a woman in the Lower Garden District on Nov. 20, 2015. Surveillance video that captured the incident horrified the city.
"I woke up two days later in the hospital with my family and friends around me, and that was the happiest moment of my life," Gold testified Monday.
Less than 24 hours after shooting Gold, New Orleans police said Cain kidnapped a couple sitting in a parked car in Treme, forced them to drive to an abandoned school in the Florida neighborhood, and then raped and robbed them both at gunpoint.
Dr. Peter Gold is the good Samaritan nearly saving a woman from a rapist. He shown here with court officials the day that Euric Cain was sentenced.
"To be suddenly taken out like that, and demoralized and dehumanized ... to have every bad thing you can imagine being done to you by someone who had no right to do it, our whole lives were destroyed over it," the male victim testified Friday. "We will get past this, but this was absolutely destructive on every level. It's affected my life, her life and so many lives."
The female victim told Cain, "I'm glad this day has finally arrived. I have never in my life encountered such evil.
"That night, he boasted that his nickname was 'Murder.' He did murder us, a little piece of us. He maimed us that night, during that heinous act. ... Why this individual, at 21, thought he could project himself into others' lives ... I have no idea what is wrong with him."
Cain also pleaded guilty as charged to three counts of armed robbery and to six counts of second-degree rape, after those charges were amended downward from first-degree rape, which would have carried a mandatory life sentence. His plea deal also saw Cain plead guilty to three counts of second-degree kidnapping, one count of attempted first-degree rape, two counts of carjacking, one count of sexual battery and one count of unauthorized use of a credit/debit card.
Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro hailed the outcome last week, calling Cain's actions "one of the most horrific crime sprees in recent memory in this city, which is saying plenty." Cannizzaro has scheduled a press conference Monday to discuss Cain's sentencing.
Cain, 22, will serve at least 50 years in prison as part of the plea agreement.
Gold issued a statement last week thanking police and prosecutors for bringing Cain to justice.
"My thoughts and prayers are with the other victims; we have all been through much this year," Gold said. "I also remain thankful to all who supported me, Tulane University and the staff at University Medical Center for saving my life and continuing to do their amazing work every day in our community."
Cain was arrested three days after Gold's shooting at a home in the 2200 block of Delachaise Street. His girlfriend Nictoria Washington initially was arrested with him on charges of harboring the fugitive. In January, she was named as an accessory after the fact to attempted murder, attempted aggravated kidnapping and two armed robbery counts. She was later released with time served.
