Homeless Man Killed During Break-In Attempt

Donnell DennisIndianapolis Metropolitan Police are investigating the city's latest homicide after responding to an attempted robbery call at a north side business.

Police were dispatched to "Clean Air Services" in the 4100 block of Millersville Road near 38th and Keystone Avenue just before midnight Sunday. When police arrived, they found a person dead behind the business. That person has been identified as 38-year-old Donnell Dennis of Indianapolis.

Donell is a homeless man with a long criminal background including Possession of Cocaine, Burglary, Theft and multiple counts of Criminal Trespassing which he spent two years in prison for.

Investigators say Dennis was trying to break into a vehicle. The owner of the vehicle along with other witnesses saw what was happening. They say Dennis ordered them to get on the ground. According to police that's when one of the witnesses, fearing for their life, shot him.

Police say all witnesses have been cooperative and no charges were filed. The case has been submitted to the prosecutor's office for review.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
