Two Men Arrested For Murder Of 11-Year-Old Akron Girl

AKRON, OHIO - The Akron Beacon Journal was in the neighborhood where an 11-year-old girl was shot and killed in the crossfire of a gun fight between two rival gang members at Hillwood Homes housing complex on a hot Thursday. Carmella, an innocent victim, died two days before her 12th birthday from a stray gun shot after hours of surgery at Akron's Children's Hospital.

This week, both of the shooters face Murder charges. 25-year-old Vernon Singleton of Akron was brought in by family members. 18-year-old Terrance Roane, formerly of Columbus both face murder charges in the death of 11-year-old Carmella Holley.

“They (Singleton and Roane) had some bad blood that unfortunately led to this innocent girl’s death,” police Detective Lt. David Whiddon said to reporters.

Carmella, a seventh-grader at Roswell Kent, had six brothers and sisters ages 9 to 22. They were raised by Carmella Holley Sr., 39, a single mother. A memorial fund has been set up at any First Merit bank.

The man arrested for the murder of this little girl, Vernon Singleton, 26, was arrested Thursday evening. His sister, Erica Singleton, 28, and her boyfriend Ernest Thomas, Jr, 31, were shot to death early Thursday morning at 1104 Grant Street. Police say Singleton and two other men unloaded 41 rounds into an inner city home mistakenly believing the person that shot Singleton's sister to be inside.

A bullet grazed Naisha Finklia's, 23, head. Her four-year-old daughter and two-year-old son where also home, but not injured.

Akron police were in the area, heard the gunshots and responded. Besides Singleton, Officers also arrested Steven Johnson, 30, and Sheldon Bell, 21. They are charged with felonious assault.
