Burglaries Up 50% From 2011 In Indy Area Neighborhoods

Home burglaries are up for most districts in the metro Indianapolis area this year, so police want you to step up your game and make your home less of a target.
"They ripped the door hinges out from the frame," said Anthony, a recent burglary victim.
Anthony showed Eyewitness News how a burglar got into his house in January, the second break-in at his southeast Indianapolis home.
"Took a couple of laptops, my son's Xbox and all of his games and my Game Boy double screen," he said.
Police say electronics like flat-screen televisions and Xbox game consoles are high-target items for burglars.
"They are looking for items they can get rid of quickly, pawn or items that people are nowadays looking for, electronics," said IMPD spokesperson Anthony Schneider.
Break-ins in the North and East Districts were down in January compared with the same month a year ago. The highest jump was in the Southeast District, where break-ins jumped from 128 break-ins to a whopping 200. Burglaries in the Southwest and Northwest Districts went up, too.
Anthony says burglars hit homes in a neighborhood a few streets away, too. After getting burglarized twice, he's hoping more people will keep their eyes open.
"I would like my neighbors to call the police if they see something. I would do the same," Anthony said.
Even if your neighborhood posts signs about a neighborhood crime watch, police say you should make your home less vulnerable.
"If you can give the appearance that someone is home, that is your best bet. Leave some lights on, or maybe the television on," Schneider said.
Although the number of break-ins are up in his district, Anthony hopes he's had his last brush with burglars.
