Police say this man who was attempting to rob the Kroger was shot in the face by an employee of the store on Monday evening, and later died.

Around 6 P.M., IMPD responded to the 5000 block of West 71st Street to investigate a possible robbery and shots fired.

While police were en route to the incident, they received information that someone had been shot, according to police reports.
Upon arrival, police found 26-year-old Jeremy Atkinson had been shot in the face.

Police are still investigating, but they believe Atkinson was attempting to rob the store. When the alleged robber entered the store, reports state that he forced a female employee into an office area while holding a hard object against her back.

As they entered the office, a second employee noticed them and shot the suspect in the face. Atkinson was transported to St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, where he died Monday night. Police took statements from witnesses. Officers learned that's when 24-year-old Kroger employee Elijah Elliott of Crawfordsville, a security giard for the store, pulled a gun and fired shots, striking Atkinson in the face.

Kroger employees who were present during the robbery were questioned to corroborate this story. The Marion County prosecutor's office says an arrest is not expected and that IMPD investigated the shooting thoroughly.

Police said Atkinson escaped from a halfway house in Indianapolis in October of 2011. He was there due to previous Armed Robbery and gun related convictions.
