JERSEY CITY, NJ. - A Jersey City man accused of attacking his ex-girlfriend and her 3-month-old baby smeared feces on his face before a court appearance Wednesday.

Frederico Bruno, 19, was due in court to answer charges stemming from a vicious attack last Friday against ex-girlfriend Madeline Calderone, her baby and her friend that caused the toddler to die the next day in a hospital. The infant, Damien Bruno, is believed to be Bruno’s son, according to Hudson County Assistant Prosecutor Mike D’Andrea. Officials are awaiting DNA tests to confirm.

Just before Federico Bruno was due to answer his charges via a video link from the jail, he covered his face in his own feces. Further protesting the accusations, Federico Bruno insisted “its a lie”, although the two surviving witnesses have reported otherwise, as charges were read to him by the judge. His public defender immediately advised him to stay quiet, reported the Star-Ledger.

Frederico Bruno appears at Central Judicial Processing court in Jersey City for the second time as his charges are upgraded to attempted homicide on Wednesday.

Bruno was cleaned up before going before the judge to hear his bail being raised from $300,000 to $500,000, cash only.

The accusations stem from an attack in which Bruno reportedly attacked Calderone’s friend, allegedly stabbing her multiple times in the face and body with a knife and a meat cleaver. When Calderone, 20, attempted to intervene, she ended up being pushed out of the third-floor window with the infant in her arms, according to D’Andrea.

Once Calderone was on the ground, it is believed by police that Bruno then beat her and the baby with a piece of furniture. The baby later died at Hackensack University Medical Center. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of the baby’s death, at which time additional charges may be added to the ones already in place, said D’Andrea.

Bruno was later found hiding in a refrigerator a few miles away in Belleville, said D’Andrea, who declined to confirm multiple media reports suggesting a tip from a family member led authorities to the accused.

This is not the first time Bruno has run afoul of the law. According to Jersey City Police Sgt. Pat McCarthy, Bruno has had a several arrests in the past related to narcotics - specifically crack cocaine.

The current charges against Bruno include two counts of attempted murder and a litany of weapons charges. Since there are multiple victims, the sentences have the possibility of being served consecutively, says to D’Andrea.

Bruno faces up to 60 years in prison without the possibility of being released until 85 percent of the time has been served, D’Andrea said. Should the charges be upgraded to Murder for the death of the baby, Damien Bruno, the sentence would 30 years to life.

Calderone remains in the hospital in serious but stable condition. Her friend has been released and is expected to make a full recovery.
